Bio

Dr. Sheila Teves is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning gene regulation, particularly the roles of transcription factors in stem cell biology and development. By combining genomics, imaging, and gene editing technologies, Dr. Teves's lab has challenged textbook knowledge on RNA Polymerase II transcription initiation and explored how transcription factors promote memory across cell divisions. She holds a Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Mechanisms of Gene Regulation and has received Scholar Awards from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies. Dr. Teves earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Washington, Seattle, with a focus on genomics, and completed her postdoctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley, emphasizing stem cell biology and super-resolution live cell imaging.
