Bio
Kalen Dofher is an environmental microbiologist focused on developing environmental cyanobacteria into model systems for the production of high-value biomass. In 2020 his desire to find sustainable and ethical solutions in food systems led him to earn his BSC in applied animal biology at the UBC faculty of Land and Food Systems. There he discovered the endless capacity of microorganisms to transform and is now a PhD candidate in Genome Science and Technology. He believes that nature has always held the solutions to sustainability problems, and that by understanding the complex environmental systems that surround us we will be able to integrate and amplify them into industrial practices and processes. Outside of the lab he delights in hands-on discovery of the natural world by adventuring out into it as well as incorporating it into food by fermenting and foraging.
