The lab investigates excitation-contraction coupling in muscle cells. We utilise high resolution three-dimensional fluorescence microscopy as well as transmission and 3-D electron microscopy to understand structure-function relationships in cells. We are particularly interested in the role of caveolae in cardiac muscle, and employ a combination of 3D imaging, contraction studies, and viral gene transfection to investigate normal and abnormal hearts. In addition to the cardiovascular system, we have collaborative projects with other laboratories interested in gastroenterology, endocrinology, neurophysiology, ion channels and lipid metabolism.
