Dr. Pieter Cullis

Dr. Pieter Cullis awarded a 2023 Killam Prize

March 21, 2023

Dr. Pieter Cullis (Dept. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine) is one of two UBC faculty awarded a 2023 Killam Prize, administered by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC).

Killam Prizes recognize “active Canadian scholars who have distinguished themselves through sustained research excellence, making a significant impact in their respective fields of engineering, health sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.” Dr. Cullis received the 2023 Killam Prize for Health Sciences. He is recognized for fundamental research advances in the development of nanomedicines employing lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology. Notably, this work has contributed to several approved drugs, and enabled the success of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines.

This year’s awardees also include Dr. Sally Otto (UBC Zoology), who received the prize in Natural Sciences. A prize of $100,000 is awarded to each Killam Prize winner.

Please see UBC’s announcement here, and the full award announcement on the Killam Laureates site here.
