Dr. Natalie Strynadka (Dept. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine), is one of three new University Killam Professors at UBC.
The University Killam Professorship is the highest honor UBC can confer on a member of faculty, recognizing “exceptional teachers and researchers who are leaders in their fields, and who have received international recognition for their talents and efforts” (see UBC announcement).
Dr. Strynadka’s pioneering research has advanced an atomic-level understanding of antibiotic resistance mechanisms in bacteria, and is helping design novel therapeutics. More recently, she has also been at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19, providing key structural and mechanistic insights for antiviral development. Among her many national and international recognitions, she is the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Structure-based Antimicrobial Discovery on the Bacterial Membrane, a Fellow of the Biophysical Society of Canada, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Fellow of the Royal Society, London, and a 20-year HHMI Senior International Research Scholar.
“I am very honoured to receive this recognition from UBC,” Dr. Strynadka said. “The award reflects directly the amazing trainees and research scientists of our laboratory, whose multifaceted abilities, energy and curiosity for science have fuelled our anti-infective research over the past two decades.”
