Abstract:

Sperm chromatin organisation and composition is extremely diverse in animals. In many species, including mammals, histones are replaced with protamines during the compaction of haploid spermatid nuclei. The function of this process, known as the histone-to-protamine transition, remains poorly understood. We study the mechanism of histone removal during spermiogenesis in Drosophila, where unique paternal effect mutants disrupt this process. Our work reveals that changes in sperm chromatin composition has unexpected consequences on the identity of paternal chromosomes during the formation of the diploid zygote.
