Dr. Douglas Allan Receives co-funded grant from Alzheimer Society and Brain Canada
June 20, 2025
LSI researcher Dr. Douglas Allan has been awarded a Proof of Concept Grant through the Alzheimer Society Research Program, co-funded by Brain Canada Foundation.
This national initiative is investing $5.1 million in 37 promising dementia research projects in 2025. Dr. Allan’s project, “A universal platform for high volume genetic modifier testing in Tauopathy,” aims to accelerate the identification of harmful Tau gene mutations associated with dementia.
By developing a fruit fly system that uses high speed genetics, his team will sort benign from toxic human Tau mutations. This approach will not only help clinicians interpret genetic test results but also reveal critical regions of the Tau protein involved in neurodegeneration—laying the groundwork for more targeted and effective therapies.
