Muscle cells contract after electrical stimulation, requiring an elaborate network of specialized proteins. Mutations to the DNA coding any of these specialized proteins can lead to severe muscle disease. Dr Filip van Petegem’s lab has resolved the 3D structure of a protein known as STAC, which is the target for Native American Myopathy. Mutations in STAC destroy the interaction with the electrical sensor in muscle tissue.
